Who do you think the best music group of all time is? Led Zeppelin? U2? The Beatles? Rolling Stones?
Personally, I think Coldplay, if they were around a bit longer, would be among the best groups ever.

CAN WE NOT AGREE THAT OASIS IS THE GREATEST BAND IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD?
That is from a Saturday Night Live sketch.
Actually, I'd have to say that U2 is #1 (pre-Zooropa)), followed closely by Air Supply.
Rock On!
U2 is da bomb diggity...Coldplay has been described as the "next U2." Who can surpass Bono though? I have much respect for the man given his musical talent combined with his humanitarian efforts. The fact that he's a giver makes his band so much more likeable.
Does Pearl Jam belong on the list of greatest bands of all time?
Hands down it has to be Spinal Tap. Just check out these lyrics from one of their classics:
Stop wasting my time
You know what I want
You know what I need
Or maybe you don't
Do I have to come right
Flat out and tell you everything?
Gimme some money
Gimme sone money
I'm nobody's fool
I'm nobody's clown
I'm treating you cool
I'm putting you down
But baby I don't intend to leave empty handed
Gimme some money
Gimme some money
Don't get me wrong
Try getting me right
Your face is ok but your purse is too tight
I'm looking for pound notes
Loose change
Bad checks, anything
Gimme some money
Gimme some money
Seriously, it has to be U2 by FAR! Not only does is their music great...it actually means something! Not to mention their staying power (something RobsObs knows little about). They have been thriving for the last 20 years. How many bands can say the same?
Pearl Jam was good in the early '90s but faded quickly. Coldplay the same only in this decade. I like both of them but we'll be hearing them in the "Where Are They Now?" files soon.
I heard U2 was on the verge of breaking up before they came out with Achtung Baby (the one that had ONE, MYSTERIOUS WAYS, etc. on it). That CD is amazing...
Agree with Pearl Jam not being so great anymore. I still like them personally but it's not quite the same as it used to be.
Collective Soul is awesome in my opinion, but their formula is always the same. They can't diversify their music very well. Instead they stick to a formula that seems to work pretty well.
I thought William Hung was gonna be the next star of the new millenium...
I REALLY liked Ezra. I thought they were going to be the next greatest things. That is of course until Better than Ezra came out.
ABBA Rules!
In terms of a complete library of great songs, I have to go with Zeppelin. You could play an entire boxed set and skip only a couple songs. From top to bottom, they're the best.
U2 is great, but as RobOb said, pre-Zooropa U2 was on a different level of greatness. Lack of consistency is evident.
My favorite band is Pearl Jam, but they've clearly lost their edge with their last few albums. Still, each album has at least 2-3 great songs. Musically, they are far more innovative than anyone else out there now. Seeing them live was a spiritual experience I will never forget.
I also have to give a big nod to the Chili Peppers. They've been at it for over 20 years and if you've listened to their latest CD, they're just getting better and better.
Today's rock muzak is crapola. Aside from Linkin Park, there are very few truly talented groups out there. Pop artists like that Justin Timberlake guy are more talented than most rockers now.
I think U2 lost their minds with Zooropa. I think they were trying to reinvent themselves or they were trying to broaden their appeal. Whatever. The bottom line was that it was a mess and took away from their greatness.
How does Brittany Spears rank? I cannot wait for her next album! Oh my God!
On a more serious note, the problem with music today is that it is pre-packaged crap that large studios tinker with and feed to the masses by stuffing it down our collective throats in huge helpings. Radio and air play is controlled by the record companies and CDs are sold only through 4 large record companies. They just make sure that the masses will eat it up before releasing anything.
So how does one obtain "real" music that hasn't been tinkered with, i.e. "underground music?" Is that even available in stores?
Directly from bands and independent record labels. We were at a summer festival last weekend and one of the bands had a lot of energy. I was not familiar with the local band, but there seemed to be a pretty good following. They had CDs for sale.
It is an inefficient way to get music, but that's the way it is.
